Historian Mary Beard reveals the hidden symbolism of the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I, one of the most iconic images of the Tudor Queen.

Overview

We produced a series of films for the Faces of a Queen exhibition at Royal Museums Greenwich.
The films we produced featured prominent commentators making observations on symbolism and the contemporary relevance of these paintings.
The films featured an academic (Mary Beard), a super model (Eunice Olumide), a fashion designer (Daniel Lismore) and a Pearly Queen (The Pearly Queen of Royal Greenwich).

We placed great emphasis on ensuring that the contributors engaged deeply with the painting, carefully analyzing its essence. To accomplish this, we devised a novel technique called the 'painting cam.' By creating a sizable replica of the artwork and strategically embedding the camera lens at its center, we skillfully captured the contributors' perspectives from the painting's vantage point.

This ingenious setup resulted in vibrant footage, depicting each commentator in the act of closely scrutinizing the artwork, their proximity to the camera lens intensifying the immersive experience. Through this method, we effectively conveyed the thoughtful approach and profound consideration that each contributor exhibited while responding to the painting.
